What is the role of a Safety Officer?
A Safety Officer inspects products and the staff to make sure that everything, and everyone, are as safe as possible. They ensure that the processes that take place within the facilities are in accordance with the Occupational Safety Guidelines (OSH). They usually work in those corporations, institutions, regulatory agencies and similar places where safety is necessary. Ideal candidates hold degrees in safety regulation management and administration. Degrees in other related fields may also prove helpful. Candidates should be able to spontaneously answer questions regarding legislation and the industry in particular. For construction sites, for instance, knowledge of EPA regulations and gas cutting may prove beneficial. An ideal candidate’s past work experience must show evident commitment to the OSH guidelines and to safety regulations in general. Communication skills and assertiveness is crucial for enforcing laws. Following are some of the interview questions that may help you in selecting the best person for this job.
Operational and Situational questions
- State the process in detail that you may adopt in conducting a workplace audit.
- Describe in detail the process of job safety analysis (JSA).
- How will you implement and enforce a Hazard Communication Program?
- How would you encourage employees to wear and make use of safety equipment? What would you do if you saw some that weren’t?
- Suppose you wish to make changes and improve the workplace safety management, but some or one of the managers disregards it and considers it out of budget or cumbersome. What would you do?
Role-specific questions
- Describe in detail about gas cutting or any other important task. Explain the hazards that may be experienced while conducting it.
- State a few regulations that have enforced on scaffolding and similar materials.
- Are you familiar with EPA regulations and their enforcement in this particular industry?
- Will you set any priorities for your first working week? Which ones? How do you plan to achieve them?
- What equipment and strategies do you use to calculate noise exposure?
- Are you familiar with writing reports and memos?
- Are you familiar with safety training? Can you give an example of when you had to implement it?
- What methods do you use to keep abreast with recent regulations?
Behavioral questions
- Have employees in the past been compliant in accepting and following your imposed safety regulations? If not, how did you handle the situation?
- State an incident where you were unable to see serious negligence. How did you compensate later on?
- State the most dangerous and dire violation of your regulations that you have ever seen in your past working experience.
- State a time when you stopped and withheld a process that posed certain dangers to the company. How did you do it? And what was the outcome?
